The Jigsaw Project

During November and December 2009 Bluestreak Arts engaged artist Liz Collier and a team of 9 artists, play workers and designers to deliver over 100 hours of participatory arts workshops in 11 of Blackburn’s Children’s Centres. Commissioned by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council the aim of this process was for each centre to create a unique piece of a ‘Jigsaw’.

Workshops used a variety of artistic mediums to influence and develop the final piece.
We played with paint, collage, pencil, glitter, singing, story telling, role play and dancing.
Each final piece held elements of the centres geography, community and individual character expressed in imagery, words, colour, shape and style. Part of the final process was to bring all of these unique pieces together into one single vision and create a ‘whole’ picture of all of the centres unified as one. The final piece was a joint work created at the celebratory event, completing the picture. The ‘Jigsaw’ when all together is 2m by 6m with each piece being over a metre square!
