The ‘Urban Voices’ project was centred on providing the opportunity for members of the many diverse communities, cultures and religions within Preston the prospect of finding a common creative and cultural voice.

Our aim was to provide and facilitate a series of six practical workshops with local faith groups, out reach agencies and cultural centres. The aim of which was to create poetry, prose and story that came from the people of Preston city and held a true reflection of our situation and time.

Each of the diverse groups was able to showcase their work along side each other in the hope of opening channels of communication between them. It was hoped this dialogue would continue via the specifically designed website.

URBAN VOICES Group Poem

For the past six weeks we’ve been writing poetry

Which we have enjoyed immensely

We’ve written about our lives in our city

About our parks and rivers so pretty

We hope you enjoy this little ditty

There is a group of people

Cool URBAN VOICES in the wilderness

Buzzzzing - Fantastic poetry in motion

Woooo woooo crazy creative writing

Poetry comes from the heart and soul

Writing poems has made us feel whole

It’s been therapeutic in everyway

We wish it was on forever, we wish we could stay

It helped us offload our fears and shed a few tears

Coming to terms with our past

Laying those ghosts to rest at last

We like writing poetry

We liked the music workshop - playing my recorder

Our favourite poems were about

Blackpool and Dancing, Football and Fire Engines

We enjoyed joining in, taking our poems home

We have discovered a new world of poetry

It’s been weird and wonderful crazy and cool

We had a fun time

Writing poems with rhythm and rhyme

Thanks to Urban Voices

We have all been in the Evening Post

And that’s what we have enjoyed the most

Friends sat together laughing as we write this verse

It’s all very exciting our knowledge is too diverse

Getting a chance to tell how we feel

Telling our story is a really good deal

Working with this community

Gives us a sense of unity

Choosing subjects making choices

Uniting the people of Preston’s voices
